COURSE CURRICULUM

The Veterinary Assistant program is divided into two levels designed to provide a comprehensive education in animal care and support within veterinary settings. Level 1 courses build a strong foundation, beginning with Animal Anatomy and Physiology I (ANAT1130) and Animal Behaviour, Handling and First Aid (ANML1000), which teach students about animal biology and safe handling techniques. Shelter Animal Care (ANML1010) introduces care practices for animals in shelters, while Veterinary Laboratory Procedures I (ANML1030) focuses on diagnostic testing and lab skills. Supporting academic skills are developed through College Reading & Writing Across Contexts (COMM1085) and Conestoga 101 (CON0101). Animal Ethics & Welfare (ETHS1040) emphasizes humane treatment and ethical considerations, while Veterinary Mathematics (MATH1345) provides the math skills necessary for medication dosages and calculations. Safety in the Workplace (OHS1320) ensures understanding of occupational health and safety standards. Animal Restraint, Nursing and Surgical Care I (SURG1000) covers fundamental nursing and surgical assistance skills. Level 2 advances practical experience with Grooming Lab I: Equipment Care, Bathing & Brushing (ANML1020) and Laboratory Animal Care (ANML1040). A Field Placement (FPLT1260) offers hands-on experience in an animal care environment, enhancing real-world skills. Veterinary Office Management (MGMT1265) teaches administrative duties critical to veterinary practice operations, while Animal Nutrition (NUTR1010) and Veterinary Pharmacology Fundamentals (PHAR1200) deepen understanding of animal dietary needs and medication use. The program concludes with Animal Restraint, Nursing and Surgical Care II (SURG1010), building on earlier nursing skills. Together, these courses prepare students for effective and compassionate roles as Veterinary Assistants.
