COURSE CURRICULUM

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) program at Conestoga College is structured into two levels that provide students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience needed to excel in the healthcare field. In Level 1, students begin with foundational courses such as College Reading & Writing Across Contexts (COMM1085) and Conestoga 101 (CON0101), which support academic success and adjustment to college life. Safety in the Workplace (OHS1320) ensures students understand essential workplace safety protocols. Core healthcare courses include Supportive Care Theory and Practice (PSW1317), which introduces person-centered care concepts, and Structure and Function of the Body for Person Centered Care (PSW1367), providing essential anatomy and physiology knowledge. Professional Practice (PSW1378) prepares students for ethical and professional behavior, while Mental Health and Dementia Care (PSW1635) focuses on supporting clients with mental health needs and cognitive impairments. In Level 2, students gain practical experience through two field placements (FPLT1687 and FPLT1707), where they apply their learning in real healthcare settings under supervision. Additional courses such as Palliative and Community Care (PSW1690) deepen understanding of end-of-life and community-based care, and Personal Support Worker Campus Clinical (PSW1715) provides further hands-on training in a simulated environment. Supportive Care Theory and Practice II (PSW1727) builds on initial theory to enhance students’ skills and confidence. Together, these courses and placements prepare students to deliver compassionate, competent care across various healthcare settings.
