COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Assistant program at Conestoga College spans three terms and provides students with a solid foundation in medical laboratory procedures and clinical skills required to assist in healthcare environments. In Level 1, students are introduced to key concepts through courses such as Anatomy and Physiology (ANAT1120), Clinical Biochemistry 1 (CHEM1080), and Medical Lab Techniques 1 (SCIE1410), where they gain initial lab experience. Academic and professional development is supported by College Reading & Writing Across Contexts (COMM1085), Conestoga 101 (CON0101), and Professional Practice and Ethics (ETHS1030). Students also learn essential calculations and safe lab practices in Laboratory Mathematics and Procedures for MLA (MATH1365) and Safety in the Workplace (OHS1320). In Level 2, students deepen their practical and theoretical knowledge with Clinical Microbiology 1 (BIOL1100), Specimen Procurement A and B (SCIE1420 and SCIE1425), and Medical Lab Techniques 2 (SCIE1430), building competence in handling biological samples. Introduction to Immunology & Hematology (SCIE1440) further prepares students for diagnostic roles, while Medical Lab Assistant/Technician Simulation (SCIE1500) offers realistic practice in a controlled setting. Students also complete one General Education elective from options available in the student portal. In Level 3, the program culminates in a Field Placement (FPLT1620), where students apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world healthcare setting under supervision. This hands-on experience is critical for transitioning into the workforce. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) exams, positioning them for employment in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic labs.
