COURSE CURRICULUM

This two-term carpentry program provides a comprehensive foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of new construction. In Level 1, students will develop essential skills such as reading and writing in a college context, orientation to college life, and foundational knowledge in new construction theory and practice. They will learn to interpret plans, specifications, and building codes, which are critical for ensuring construction projects meet regulatory standards. Additionally, students will build competence in estimating and calculations, important for budgeting and project planning. The hands-on practice component enables learners to gain practical experience with the tools and techniques used in carpentry, focusing on new residential and commercial construction. In Level 2, the program advances to client relations, emphasizing communication and professionalism on the job site. Students will deepen their understanding of new construction theory and practice through more complex projects and scenarios. This level also introduces metal cutting and welding skills, providing valuable cross-trade knowledge that complements carpentry expertise and enhances employability. Together, these courses prepare graduates to enter the workforce ready to contribute effectively to construction teams, with skills that align with industry standards and apprenticeship requirements. Completing this program may also provide an exemption from Level 1 in-school training for the 403A General Carpenter apprenticeship, offering a streamlined path to certification. The curriculum balances technical skills, safety, and interpersonal abilities, ensuring students are well-equipped for successful careers in Ontario’s growing construction sector.
