COURSE CURRICULUM

Conestoga’s Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) program offers a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the technical skills and creative expertise necessary for a successful career in interior design. Starting with foundational courses in construction materials, building sciences, CAD, design communication, and interior design studios focused on the design process and programming, students build a strong base in the first two levels. The program progressively advances to more specialized topics such as structural systems, colour theory, lighting design, and interior design studios focused on residential, corporate, retail, hospitality, entertainment, and healthcare environments. Students also study history of art, contemporary culture, design theory, and world cultures, enriching their understanding of design in broader social and cultural contexts. Technical skills are further developed through courses in code compliance, BIM computer applications, cost estimating, interior materials, and building plumbing, lighting, and electrical systems. The curriculum integrates project management, sustainable interior design, product research, contract administration, law and ethics, and professional practice, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the demands of the profession. Two paid co-op work terms provide valuable hands-on industry experience, bridging academic knowledge with real-world application. The program culminates in capstone interior design studios, where students apply their cumulative learning to complex design challenges, preparing them for professional practice. Electives allow students to tailor their education, and interdisciplinary courses broaden their perspectives. Overall, this rigorous and immersive program ensures graduates are proficient in technical, creative, and professional skills, ready to excel in diverse interior design careers.
