COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering – Electronic Systems Engineering (ESE) program at Conestoga College is a CEAB-accredited degree that prepares students to excel at the interface of software and hardware, addressing a critical need in Canada’s innovation economy. Spanning 11 academic levels and three paid co-op work terms, the program begins with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, digital systems, and programming, while early engineering projects introduce hands-on design thinking. Students progressively build expertise in telecommunications, signal processing, digital design, electronics, and data structures, while developing key professional skills in project management and business foundations. Embedded systems, both hardware and software, are emphasized through dedicated coursework and applied projects. Advanced topics include control systems, operating systems, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, wireless communications, computer architecture, and software engineering. A project-based learning approach is embedded throughout, with major engineering and capstone projects in the final years focusing on solving real-world societal challenges. Interdisciplinary and program option electives—such as artificial intelligence, advanced DSP applications, value engineering, and network security—allow for specialization based on career interests. Students also complete courses in law, ethics, and professional practice to prepare for licensure and professional responsibilities. Co-op terms are strategically placed to allow for practical industry experience, helping students connect academic knowledge to real-world challenges while earning credit toward Professional Engineers Ontario work requirements. The curriculum combines technical depth with innovation, encouraging students to prototype and implement advanced electronic and software systems. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in electronics design, embedded systems, software engineering, and product development, and are eligible to apply for a Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license in Canada. With a balance of theoretical learning, practical application, and industry engagement, the ESE program cultivates highly skilled engineers capable of driving technological advancement across a wide range of industries.
