COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering – Building Systems Engineering (BSE) program at Conestoga College is a comprehensive, CEAB-accredited co-op degree that integrates advanced technical education with real-world experience. Spanning 11 academic levels, the curriculum begins with foundational courses in calculus, chemistry, physics, group dynamics, and building science, while early design projects focus on building envelopes and system integration. As students progress, they explore advanced topics such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, electrical foundations, fire and smoke control, and HVAC system design. Project-based learning is central to the program, with each academic year featuring progressively complex design challenges in residential, commercial, and industrial building contexts. Key courses in areas like building automation, heat transfer, hydronic systems, energy management, and control systems equip students to develop integrated, sustainable building systems. Programming, AI, microprocessors, and digital signal processing are also included to align with the increasing role of automation and smart technology in modern buildings. The program includes three paid co-op work terms and two capstone projects, providing extensive hands-on experience and industry exposure. Additionally, students complete electives in both interdisciplinary and technical fields, including topics like advanced manufacturing, value engineering, operations management, and welding. Courses in economics, law, ethics, and project management ensure well-rounded professional development. By the final levels, students synthesize their learning in projects addressing energy planning, turbo machinery, and the socio-technical context of engineering. The program’s strong emphasis on BIM tools, energy optimization, and system integration prepares graduates for careers in mechanical and electrical systems design, building automation, energy analysis, and operations management. With its unique mix of theoretical depth, practical application, and industry exposure, the BSE program prepares students for licensure as Professional Engineers and for leadership roles in shaping the future of sustainable building systems and smart infrastructure.
