COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) – Financial Services program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for successful careers in financial planning, insurance, banking, and investment management. In the early levels, students build foundational skills with courses like Introduction to Financial Accounting, Microeconomics, Financial Planning, Property and Casualty Insurance, Business Math, and Professional Communication. As the program advances, students deepen their knowledge in areas such as Canadian Securities Fundamentals I and II, Financial Planning Essentials, Life and Health Insurance, Business Law, and Behavioural Finance. Emphasis is placed on developing technical expertise and professional skills through courses like Ethics and the Financial Planner, Financial Planning Technical Knowledge and Analysis, Retirement and Estate Planning, Taxation for Financial Planners, and Client Relationship Management. Students also gain practical experience with an eight-month paid co-op work term divided into two placements in Levels 7 and 8, allowing them to apply classroom learning in real-world financial service settings. The curriculum integrates electives offering interdisciplinary and program-specific options, enabling students to tailor their education to their interests. Advanced finance topics and research skills are further developed in later levels, preparing students for professional certification exams such as the Personal Financial Planner (PFP®), Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), and Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP®) designations. This well-rounded program combines theoretical knowledge, practical application, and co-op experience, equipping graduates with the skills and credentials needed to thrive in the dynamic financial services industry.
