ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Concordia University of Edmonton is a publicly funded independent academic institution located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Accredited under the Alberta Post-secondary Learning Act, it offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees in arts, science, and management, along with graduate programs in education, information technology, information security, and psychology. The university primarily relies on tuition and private donations for funding, with the Alberta government contributing nearly one-third of its budget as of 2022.Founded in 1921 by the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod as Concordia College, the institution initially served as a high school focused on preparing young men for preaching and teaching. It became co-educational in 1939 and began offering university courses in affiliation with the University of Alberta starting in 1967. The college graduated its first bachelor's degree students in 1988 and transitioned to full degree-granting status, separating from the high school in 1994. After ending its affiliation with the University of Alberta in 1991, it gained private university college status in 1987, and was renamed Concordia University College of Alberta in 1995. The high school became independent in 2000, and in 2015, the institution adopted its current name, Concordia University of Edmonton. It formally secularized in 2016, removing Christian references from its mission statement due to minimal religious funding.The university is organized into five faculties—Arts, Education, Graduate Studies, Management, and Science—and two schools focused on Physical Education and Wellness and Music. It offers 45 majors and minors, after-degree programs, master's degrees, and graduate certificates. Campus life is vibrant with community choirs, orchestras, drama productions, and multiple dormitories. The university also features athletic facilities and has a history of engagement with local sports teams. Recent faculty concerns have surfaced around governance and workplace culture, while the university has faced scrutiny over the use of public funds in real estate acquisitions.
