COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminal and Social Justice diploma program at College of the Rockies spans two years and requires completion of 60 credits, offering a comprehensive foundation in criminology, psychology, sociology, Indigenous studies, and related fields. In the first year, students take foundational courses such as Introduction to Criminology, English Composition, Indigenous Studies, Psychology, and Sociology, alongside Advanced Professional Communications and an introduction to the Criminal Justice System. They also develop skills in conflict resolution and crisis intervention, with further psychology courses to deepen their understanding of human behavior. The second year builds on this knowledge with courses like Introduction to Canadian Law, Indigenous Peoples’ Ways of Knowing, Indigenous Family Support Studies, and Social Research Methods. Students also explore specialized topics including Law, Youth and Young Offenders, Psychological Explanations of Criminal Behavior, and choose electives such as Social Psychology, Sociological Theory, or Addictions Studies. Additional electives from areas like Cultural Anthropology, Poetry and Drama, Health and Wellness in Indigenous Communities, Women in Canada, and Statistics broaden the academic experience. This program is designed to maximize transferability to degree programs, with specific notes that students intending to complete a degree should complete English Composition plus an additional English literature course, and those transferring to Vancouver Island University after the first year must complete Introduction to Canadian Law. This well-rounded curriculum equips students with essential knowledge and skills for careers in criminal and social justice or for continuing their education in related fields.
