COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work Pre-Major program spans two years and includes a comprehensive set of courses designed to build foundational knowledge in social sciences and humanities, totaling 60 credits. In the first year’s fall semester, students take courses such as English Composition, Introduction to Indigenous Studies, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology focusing on the individual and society, and an elective from humanities, social science, or sciences. During the winter semester, the curriculum includes either Psychological Explanations of Criminal and Deviant Behaviour or Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, followed by Introduction to Psychology 2, Sociology 2 on social institutions, Statistics, and a science elective. The second year begins with fall courses like Roles and Responsibilities in Human Services, Trends and Issues in Human Services, Introduction to Social Science Research Methods, a choice between Indigenous Peoples’ Ways of Knowing or Indigenous Peoples’ Family Support Studies, and either Introduction to Physical Geography 1 or Introduction to Psychopathology and Mental Health. In the winter semester, students complete courses in either Introduction to Poetry and Drama or Introduction to Prose Fiction, Intercultural Communication or Women in Canada: 1920 to the Present, Law, Youth and Young Offenders, Introduction to Sociological Theory, and a choice between Introduction to Physical Geography 1 or Social Psychology. This structured curriculum equips students with critical theoretical knowledge, research skills, and an understanding of social systems, preparing them for further studies in social work and related fields. The blend of humanities, social science, and indigenous perspectives offers a well-rounded academic foundation to support success in advanced social work programs.
