COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) Infant and Toddler Educator Diploma program is structured over two years, totaling 60 credits, designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge for working with young children and their families. In the first year, students complete 30 credits covering foundational topics such as health, safety, and nutrition, language and literacies in early childhood, observation, documentation, reflection, and research practices, as well as guiding young children and nurturing creativity. Interpersonal communication is emphasized with courses offered through various departments to enhance effective interaction skills. Field placements I and II provide practical, hands-on experience in early childhood settings, supporting the integration of theory into practice. Additionally, students study introductory psychology to better understand child development and social dynamics within families, including perspectives on cross-cultural diversity. The second year also consists of 30 credits focusing on more advanced and specialized subjects. Courses include place-based environments and outdoor learning approaches that integrate science and math, responsive care and education for children under three, and inclusive childcare practices. Students deepen their understanding of developmental psychology or child and adolescent development and explore essential skills for ECE administrators, preparing them for leadership roles. Field placements III and IV continue to provide experiential learning opportunities to refine practical skills. The curriculum also incorporates professional development through courses like Journey to Professionalism, guiding students in their transition to becoming qualified early childhood educators. Overall, this comprehensive two-year program combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional growth to prepare graduates to provide high-quality, inclusive, and culturally responsive care and education to infants and toddlers.
