COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth Sciences B.Sc. Honours program at Carleton requires 20.0 credits, combining core geology courses with complementary science and elective classes to provide a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s systems. Included in the major CGPA are foundational courses such as The Earth and Life Odyssey, alongside 4.5 credits covering essential topics like Mineralogy, Petrology, Geodynamics, Geochemistry, Paleontology, Sedimentation, Structural Geology, and Field Geology. Students also complete 2.5 credits from specialized courses including Vertebrate Evolution, Mineral Deposits, Hydrogeology, Metamorphic Petrology, Geophysical Methods, and Isotope Geochemistry. Advanced studies are reinforced with 0.5 credit from field-focused courses and 2.0 credits at the 4000-level, culminating in a 1.0 credit Honours Thesis that enables in-depth research experience. Supporting sciences are also emphasized, requiring credits in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, and Statistics, ensuring a well-rounded scientific foundation. Additional required courses include Maps, Satellites and the Geospatial Revolution and Seminar in Science, enhancing analytical and presentation skills. Students complete 1.5 credits outside the faculties of Science and Engineering and Design, broadening interdisciplinary knowledge, plus 1.0 credit in free electives to tailor their studies. This program is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical field skills necessary for careers in geology, environmental science, and resource management, while meeting academic requirements for professional registration such as Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO).
