COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Biology at Carleton University is a 20.0-credit program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of biological sciences while allowing for academic flexibility and research opportunities. The program includes 11.5 credits that contribute to the Major CGPA, starting with foundational biology courses such as Foundations of Biology I and II, Introduction to Biological Data, and Cellular Biochemistry. Students also complete a capstone component by choosing from an Honours Workshop, Essay, or Thesis. Additional credits are selected from areas including animals, plants, genetics, microbiology, and ecology, followed by at least one advanced course in cell biology, physiology, or microbiology. The program requires further specialization through upper-level biology or biochemistry courses and includes options for research-focused studies such as a research proposal, directed studies, or advanced biology courses. Students are also required to take 1.0 credit in advanced science electives. The remaining 8.5 credits not included in the Major CGPA consist of supporting science courses including general chemistry, calculus, and selected credits from computer science, mathematics, physics, and statistics. Students must also complete science electives, continuation science courses not in biology, and courses outside the Faculties of Science and Engineering and Design to ensure interdisciplinary learning, along with 1.0 credit in free electives, preparing them for diverse scientific careers or further education.
