COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry at Carleton University is a 20.0-credit program that offers a comprehensive foundation in biological and chemical sciences, with a focus on molecular processes that govern living organisms. This program explores key biochemical concepts such as enzyme function, gene regulation, cellular communication, and energy utilization in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Students examine real-world applications in health, agriculture, environmental science, and biotechnology, such as treating disease, improving food quality, and producing biofuels.Fifteen credits are included in the major CGPA and cover essential courses in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. Foundational biology courses include genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, and cell biology, while chemistry components range from general and organic chemistry to analytical, inorganic, and physical chemistry. A strong emphasis is placed on practical lab experience, with hands-on biochemistry courses starting in the second year and culminating in advanced experimental work. Students also complete a major independent research project or honours thesis in their final year.Outside the major, 5.0 credits are required in complementary subjects: physics, mathematics (calculus and linear algebra), electives from outside science and engineering, and additional science electives.
