COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Applied Physics at Carleton University requires a total of 20 credits, with 11.5 credits contributing to the major CGPA and 8.5 credits outside the major. Students begin with foundational physics courses such as Foundations of Physics I and II or Elementary University Physics, along with introductory mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and wave motion. Core second-year courses include physics laboratories, wave mechanics, electricity and magnetism, modern physics, and computational methods. Students also take electronics and numerical methods courses to build strong technical skills. In the third year, advanced physics topics like electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, modern applied physics, dynamics, and mathematical physics are covered, along with further laboratory work. Specialized electives such as biophysics, Fourier analysis, modern optics, nuclear physics, and statistical data analysis are also available. Fourth-year students complete a capstone research project paired with advanced physics courses. Outside the major CGPA, students must complete biology or chemistry sequences, foundational earth science courses, and a suite of math courses including calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and statistics. Additionally, introductory computer science or problem-solving courses are required, along with further computer science or systems courses, and electives from outside the faculties of Science and Engineering and Design. The program culminates with seminars and free electives, offering a comprehensive education that combines physics theory, practical skills, and interdisciplinary knowledge, preparing students for careers in technology, research, or further graduate studies.
