COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering in Communications Engineering at Carleton University is a 21.0-credit program that prepares students to design and develop advanced information transmission systems and network technologies. In the first year, students complete foundational courses in chemistry, programming, circuits, statics, dynamics, calculus, linear algebra, electromagnetism, and imperative programming, along with the non-credit Introduction to Engineering Disciplines modules. A complementary studies elective rounds out the year. The second year deepens knowledge in programming, data structures, electronics, probability and statistics, multivariable calculus, digital systems, and computer organization. Students also develop communication skills for engineering and complete the ECOR 2995 Engineering Portfolio. In the third year, students study engineering economics, electromagnetics, electronics, communication theory, real-time systems, computer communications, simulation, and communications software. They also take a complementary studies elective and a basic science elective. The fourth year focuses on advanced topics such as digital signal processing, automatic control systems, digital wireless communication, network security, and communications networks. Students choose between introductory courses in machine learning or artificial intelligence in engineering, and complete a capstone project through either SYSC 4907 or the multidisciplinary ECOR 4907. A final elective in SYSC or ELEC at the 3000 level or above (including one 5000-level SYSC course if desired) completes the program. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with both theoretical and practical expertise in telecommunications, software and hardware systems, and prepares them for careers in network design, wireless systems, embedded systems, and emerging technologies like 6G and IoT.
