COURSE CURRICULUM

Carleton University’s Bachelor of Economics (B.Econ.) Honours program is a 20.0-credit degree designed to provide a thorough foundation in economic theory, quantitative methods, and applied economic analysis. Students complete 10.5 credits within the major, beginning with core courses such as ECON 1001 and 1002 (Introduction to Micro- and Macroeconomics) or FYSM 1003, along with mathematical and statistical training through ECON 1401, 1402, and 2210. Intermediate economic theory is covered in ECON 2020, 2102, 3020, and 3102, while ECON 3210 introduces econometrics, a key analytical tool. Students also take ECON 2900 (Professional Practice) and ECON 3900 (Research Methods), culminating in the ECON 4905 Honours Capstone Seminar. Beyond the core, students choose 2.0 credits in economics at the 3000 level or above, and 2.0 credits at the 4000 level, allowing for specialization in areas such as labour, international, environmental, or development economics. Outside the major, 5.0 credits must be taken in non-economics electives, while 4.5 credits are free electives, offering flexibility to pursue a minor, explore other interests, or add additional economics courses. The program develops strong analytical and quantitative skills, preparing students for careers in government, industry, or finance, or for graduate studies in economics or related disciplines.
