COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Music at Carleton University is a 20.0-credit program that offers a flexible and comprehensive exploration of music through academic study. Of the total credits, 10.0 are included in the Major CGPA. Students begin with 1.0 credit in MUSI 1020 (Thinking About Music), establishing a foundation in critical listening and analysis. They then complete 1.5 credits in core music history and culture courses, including MUSI 2007 (Popular Music 1945–1980), MUSI 2008 (Music of the World's Peoples), and MUSI 2108 (Western Art Music 1750–1900). To deepen historical understanding, students take 0.5 credit in music history and musicology at the 3000-level. The curriculum is further enriched by 2.0 credits in MUSI courses at the 2000-level, 2.0 credits at the 3000-level, and 2.0 credits at the 4000-level, allowing students to specialize in areas such as music theory, performance, composition, ethnomusicology, or digital music. An additional 1.0 credit in MUSI gives students more flexibility to explore diverse topics or deepen expertise. Beyond the major requirements, students must complete 8.0 credits in electives outside of Music, ensuring interdisciplinary breadth, and 2.0 credits in free electives to pursue individual interests or a minor. This structure provides a balance of focused musical study and broad academic exposure, preparing students for careers in music education, arts administration, performance, or further graduate study. The program fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness, and creative expression in a supportive academic environment.
