COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Theory of Architecture B.A. Honours program at Carleton University requires 20.0 credits, with 10.0 credits counting toward the Major CGPA. Students begin with 2.5 core credits covering foundational topics such as art and society, architectural history from prehistory to the present, experiencing architecture, and architectural research methods. An additional 2.0 credits are selected from courses exploring regional and historical architecture including Greek, Roman, Islamic, Medieval, Early Modern, 18th–19th Century, and Twentieth-Century architecture. Students then complete 1.0 credit from advanced topics such as Canadian architecture, architectural representation, cities in context, and the designed environment. Another 1.5 credits are taken from ARTH or ARCH courses at the 2000-level or higher, along with 0.5 credit in specialized 4000-level topics such as modern architecture, Islamic art, or Canadian architecture. Students must also complete 1.5 additional credits at the 4000-level in ARTH or ARCH. One credit is drawn from interdisciplinary courses that complement architectural history, including offerings from Canadian Studies, Geography, Heritage Conservation, Design Studies, and History. The remaining 10.0 credits fall outside the major CGPA and include 8.0 credits in electives not in ARTH or Architecture and 2.0 free electives. This structure provides students with broad and deep exposure to architectural history, theory, and related disciplines, ensuring a well-rounded academic foundation while allowing flexibility to explore complementary fields of interest.
