COURSE CURRICULUM

The English B.A. Honours program at Carleton University requires 20.0 credits, with 10.0 credits included in the Major CGPA. Students start by choosing 1.0 credit from foundational courses such as Reading Literatures and Cultures (FYSM 1004) or Writing Essays about Literature (ENGL 1010), combined with an additional 0.5 credit from a selection of interdisciplinary literature courses covering themes like literature and law, science, psychology, art, magic, or climate change. The program includes 2.0 credits focused on Indigenous and Canadian Literatures and Theories and Critical Practices, along with 2.0 credits in period-specific literature courses spanning from 500 to the present day. Students explore themes of decolonization and migration through 1.0 credit worth of specialized topics, while also completing 0.5 credit in career preparation or cultural studies courses. Further requirements include 0.5 credit in postcolonial and diaspora literature and theory, 0.5 credit at the 3000-level, and 1.5 credits at the 4000-level in English courses. The final 1.0 credit can be from any ENGL course. Outside the major, students complete 8.0 credits in electives unrelated to English and 2.0 credits in free electives, rounding out the 20.0 credits needed for the degree. This structure ensures a comprehensive and critical engagement with literature across periods, themes, and cultural contexts, preparing students for careers that demand strong analytical, writing, and interpretive skills.
