COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology B.A. Honours program at Carleton University requires the completion of 20.0 credits, with 8.0 credits counting toward the Major CGPA. Students begin with 1.5 credits in foundational biology courses, including Foundations of Biology I and II, and Introduction to Biological Data. They then complete 2.5 credits from a range of core biology courses such as Animals: Form and Function, Plants: Form and Function, Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Ecology. Additionally, students must take 0.5 credit in advanced biology topics like Plant Biochemistry, Experimental Microbiology, Human and Comparative Physiology, or Human Anatomy and Physiology. A further 1.5 credits must be completed in biology courses at the 3000-level or higher, along with 1.0 credit in general biology courses. For their capstone experience, students choose between an Honours Workshop, Honours Essay and Research Proposal, or an Honours Research Thesis, each worth 1.0 credit. Beyond the major requirements, students complete 12.0 credits outside the Major CGPA, including 1.0 credit in General Chemistry I and II, 2.0 credits in Science Faculty electives not in biology, and 6.0 credits in approved courses outside the faculties of Science, Engineering, and Design, with some credits possibly earned through interdisciplinary studies. Students also complete 1.0 credit at the 3000- or 4000-level outside biology and 2.0 credits in free electives. This comprehensive structure ensures students gain deep biological knowledge while engaging broadly with sciences and other disciplines, preparing them for diverse careers and further study.
