COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology B.A. Combined Honours program at Carleton University requires 20.0 credits for completion, including 7.0 credits within the Anthropology Major CGPA. Students begin with 1.0 credit at the introductory level, selecting from ANTH 1001 or 1002 and ANTH 1050, followed by a mandatory 1.0 credit in ANTH 2001, which provides foundational knowledge in socio-cultural anthropology. Students must also complete 1.0 credit from the ANTH 2600 series, which explores specialized ethnographic topics. At the third-year level, students take 1.5 credits covering ethnographic research methods, historical anthropological theory, and contemporary theoretical approaches (ANTH 3005, 3007, and 3008). Additionally, students must complete 0.5 credit at the 2000-level or higher in either ANTH or SOCI courses, as well as 1.0 credit at the 4000- or 5000-level in the same disciplines. For their capstone requirement, students have the option to complete a 1.0-credit Honours Research Paper (ANTH 4900), which requires a minimum GPA of 9.00 or instructor permission, or alternatively, they may complete 1.0 credit in ANTH if the Honours Essay is taken in the other discipline. Beyond the major, students must fulfill 13.0 credits through their second discipline and electives to reach the total 20.0 credits. The program emphasizes a solid grounding in ethnographic research, critical theory, and cross-cultural understanding. Students are also required to complete an Honours Essay, and where the other discipline does not require one, alternative arrangements may be made with the Anthropology Honours Co-ordinator.
