COURSE CURRICULUM

The African Studies B.A. Combined Honours program at Carleton University requires the completion of 20.0 credits, with 7.0 credits contributing to the African Studies Major CGPA. Students begin with a foundational 1.0 credit, choosing between AFRI 1001 and 1002 or FYSM 1901. They must then complete 1.0 credit focusing on African regions, selecting from courses covering areas such as the Horn of Africa, West Africa, and North Africa. A further 1.0 credit is required from intermediate-level African Studies, with diverse options including courses on globalization, urban life, migrations, and diasporas. History requirements account for 1.0 credit, covering ancient to modern African history, gender, and thematic topics. In addition, students take 0.5 credits each from politics, anthropology, and literature and culture, exploring African development, ethnography, and cultural expressions such as cinema and literature. Another 0.5 credit must be selected from a broad range of interdisciplinary courses offering context for African Studies, spanning disciplines like economics, geography, history, human rights, music, political science, and sociology. Students also complete a 0.5-credit honours seminar from a select group of advanced courses, and a 0.5-credit capstone seminar, AFRI 4000. Beyond the major, students must fulfill 13.0 credits through their second discipline, satisfy the Institute’s language requirement, and choose electives as needed to reach the total. This program provides an expansive, interdisciplinary education focused on the African continent, with flexibility to explore both regional specificity and global contexts.
