COURSE CURRICULUM

The Tourism Management Co-operative Education Diploma at Capilano University is a 60-credit, two-year program designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed for success in the tourism and hospitality industry. Students complete 45 credits of required coursework that includes foundational subjects such as communication in tourism (CMNS 154), university writing (ENGL 100), environmental stewardship (REC 152), global tourism management (TOUR 111), tourism marketing (TOUR 112), organizational behaviour (TOUR 114), financial planning (TOUR 116), and computer applications (TOUR 149). Career-focused training is emphasized through courses like Tourism Career Management (TOUR 133), Entrepreneurship (TOUR 225), Cross-Cultural Tourism (TOUR 233), and Operations Management (TOUR 250). A key feature of the program is the 6-credit, supervised Co-operative Work Experience (TOUR 140), which allows students to gain hands-on experience in the tourism industry. Risk management (TOUR 208) and practical leadership skills are also covered to prepare students for real-world challenges. In addition to the core curriculum, students complete 15 elective credits—12 credits from 100- or 200-level courses in tourism-related subjects such as Outdoor Recreation (REC), Wilderness Leadership (WLP), Study Abroad Tourism (SATO), and Tourism Management (TOUR), and 3 credits from any 100-level or higher course outside of those fields. This combination of theory, practice, and work-integrated learning ensures graduates are well-rounded, confident, and job-ready, capable of entering the workforce immediately or continuing their education in tourism and hospitality.
