COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environment and Society—Environmental Science Diploma requires a total of 60 credits, including 51 credits of core courses and 9 credits of electives. Core courses cover essential scientific foundations such as General Biology I and II, Ecology, Botany, Chemistry, and Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, ensuring students develop a strong understanding of key environmental science disciplines. Additional required courses include Learn to Code, Introduction to Statistics, and specialized topics like Environmental Stewardship and Perspectives on the Living Planet. Students must also choose 3 credits from Indigenous studies courses such as First Nations of British Columbia, Indigenous Peoples of North America, or History of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, which provide important cultural and social context. For further specialization, students select 4 credits from courses in Invertebrate or Vertebrate Zoology. The 9 credits of electives include University Writing Strategies, a technical or academic writing course, and an additional 3 credits from 100-level or higher electives, allowing students to tailor their studies to individual interests.
