COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) Diploma program is divided into several course categories. In the ECCE 100 Level Courses (27.00 credits), students take EDUC 121 (Introduction to Centre Administration), EDUC 159 (Introduction to Critical Social Justice in ECCE), EDUC 166 (Child Development I), EDUC 168 (Child Development II), EDUC 173 (Curriculum Development I), EDUC 178 (Caring & Learning in Early Years Settings), EDUC 179 (Guiding Young Children), EDUC 183 (Curriculum Development II), and EDUC 190 (Observing & Recording: Thinking with the E.L.F.). In the ECCE 200 Level Courses (18.50 credits), students complete EDUC 240 (Advanced Child Development), EDUC 244 (Theoretical Perspectives), EDUC 251 (Centre Operations), EDUC 276 (Applied Theory - Practicum I), EDUC 277 (Applied Theory - Practicum II), and EDUC 281 (Family, School and Community). For ECCE Infant Toddler/Special Needs Courses (8.00 credits), students choose 3.00 credits from EDUC 282 (Responsive Pedagogies with Infants and Toddlers) or EDUC 284 (Planning for Inclusive Practice), and 5.00 credits from EDUC 349 (Applied Theory Infant/Toddler Practicum) or EDUC 390 (Applied Theory: Inclusive Practice Practicum), with students required to select from only one stream (Infant Toddler or Special Needs). The Breadth Requirements (9.00 credits) include ENGL 100 (University Writing Strategies), a 100-level or higher ENGL or CMNS course, and a university-level elective, with those laddering into the ECCE Degree required to select a Cap Core numeracy for the elective.
