COURSE CURRICULUM

The Discover Employability Certificate program at Capilano University is a comprehensive 24-credit, eight-month program designed to prepare young adults with learning differences for success in the workplace. The curriculum is structured around seven required courses that build both professional and personal skills essential for sustainable employment and independent living. In the first term, students take DEP 001 Job Search and Maintenance, where they learn how to find and keep a job, followed by DEP 002 Health and Safety in the Workplace, which focuses on understanding safety protocols and rights in the work environment. DEP 005 Communication Skills develops essential verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, while DEP 006 Transitions supports students in adapting to new environments and routines. DEP 007 Money and Math teaches practical financial literacy, including budgeting and handling money, and DEP 008 Social Skills enhances interpersonal abilities critical for workplace relationships and social interactions. A key component of the program is DEP 009 Work Experience, a 6-credit course that places students in real job settings to apply their learning, gain confidence, and better understand employer expectations. This hands-on placement bridges classroom instruction with practical experience, helping students become more independent and job-ready. Throughout the program, students work in a small cohort of 12, receiving individualized support from experienced instructors who help foster self-awareness, self-advocacy, and professional growth. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with the tools to pursue employment, further education, or training opportunities, making the Discover Employability Certificate a meaningful step toward a more independent future.
