COURSE CURRICULUM

Capilano University’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is a 120-credit degree designed to equip students with scientific, analytical, and practical tools to address urgent environmental challenges. The program begins with 51 credits of lower-level coursework, including core sciences such as biology, botany, ecology, chemistry, coding, GIS, and statistics. Courses like ENSO 100 and ENSO 200 explore environmental stewardship and regional studies, while students also select electives focusing on Indigenous perspectives and zoology. Upper-level requirements total 18 credits, covering interdisciplinary research, reconciliation, applied environmental stewardship, biospheres, and advanced statistical modeling. Students then complete 24 credits from upper-level modules, which can be chosen across four specialized themes: Applied Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation, Climate Change – Mitigation and Adaptation, and Urban Sustainability. Each module blends theory with applied learning; for example, students in Applied Ecology study population and ecosystem ecology and GIS applications, while the Climate Change module includes ethics, sustainable geography, and sociology. Electives make up the remaining 27 credits, including writing-focused courses such as ENGL 100 and CMNS 250 or ENGL 220, with a balance of 100-level and upper-level electives to broaden student knowledge beyond core disciplines. The program emphasizes experiential learning, small class sizes, mentorship, and partnerships with community organizations, ensuring students graduate with a strong foundation in both environmental science and socially responsible practice. Through its multidisciplinary structure and applied focus, the degree prepares students to develop sustainable, science-based solutions to global environmental issues in diverse career and research paths.
