COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Psychology at Capilano University provides a comprehensive and flexible program focused on the scientific study of human thought, emotion, and behaviour. The program requires a total of 57 credits in psychology, beginning with foundational courses such as PSYC 100 and 101 (Introduction to Psychology I and II), PSYC 212 (Research Methods), and PSYC 213 (Statistical Methods). Students must also complete 12 credits from 200-level psychology electives to build a strong academic base. At the upper level, students are required to complete 21 credits, including 3 credits from each of five core areas: Social/Cultural/Personality, Biological, Cognitive, Developmental, and Mental Health and Well-Being. Additionally, students complete PSYC 412 (Applied Research Methods in Psychology) and CAPS 499 (Degree Portfolio), which integrates their learning experience. The program also includes 12 credits of upper-level psychology electives, where students can explore areas of interest or specialize through the Applied Psychology concentration. Elective options span a wide range of topics, including community psychology, drugs and behaviour, lifespan development, cognition, neuroscience, cultural psychology, and personality theory. Courses such as PSYC 325, 328, 334, 330, 304, 325, 301, and 400 are examples of options across various groupings. While some courses appear in multiple groupings, credit is applied to one category only. This structure ensures a broad and deep understanding of psychological theory and practice, preparing students for graduate studies, applied work in mental health and community services, or diverse roles in education, human resources, and research.
