COURSE CURRICULUM

The Legal Studies curriculum at Cape Breton University is designed to build a strong understanding of the Canadian legal system and its application in business and society. The program begins with foundational courses such as Business Law I and Business Law II, which introduce students to key areas including the justice system, tort law, contract law, employment law, intellectual property, privacy laws, and regulatory frameworks. These courses help students understand how legal rules impact business operations and decision-making. As students progress, they develop practical skills through Legal Research, where they learn how to interpret legislation, analyze court decisions, and apply legal reasoning using case law and research tools. Advanced courses such as Administrative Law and Employment/Labour Law focus on regulatory processes, workplace rights, hiring practices, and employer-employee relationships in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Additional specialized courses include Criminal Law, Health Law, and Sports/Recreation Law, which explore legal responsibilities and liabilities in different sectors. The program also offers special topics courses that allow deeper exploration of specific legal areas. Overall, the curriculum combines theory and practical application to prepare students for roles involving legal compliance, risk management, business law, and policy-related decision-making.
