COURSE CURRICULUM

Psychology at Cape Breton University is a scientific program that focuses on understanding behaviour and mental processes and how they are influenced by biological, cognitive, social and environmental factors. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Introduction to Psychology, where students explore key theories and research methods related to sensation, perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion and personality. Students then progress into more advanced areas including data analysis and research methods, which develop essential skills in statistical reasoning, hypothesis testing, experimental design and scientific writing. The program also offers specialized courses in areas such as clinical psychology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology and health psychology, allowing students to study topics like mental health, child development, interpersonal relationships, stress, coping and social behaviour. Applied areas such as drugs and behaviour, environmental psychology and children’s rights help students connect psychological theory with real-world issues in health, policy and society. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on research experience, critical thinking and ethical scientific practice, preparing students for graduate studies or careers in health services, counselling, education, human resources and social services. Overall, the program builds a strong understanding of how humans think, feel and behave in different contexts.
