COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry program at Cape Breton University provides a structured sequence of courses designed to build a strong foundation in chemical science, starting from basic principles and progressing to advanced theoretical and applied chemistry. In the early stage, students take General Chemistry I (CHEM-1104) and General Chemistry II (CHEM-1105), which cover fundamental topics such as atomic structure, chemical bonding, periodic trends, gases, thermodynamics, reaction rates, equilibrium, and introductory organic chemistry, along with mandatory laboratory work. Additional introductory options include Introductory Organic Chemistry (CHEM-1103) and Petroleum Chemistry (CHEM-1401), which apply chemistry concepts to health sciences and industry contexts. As students advance, they can explore specialized and theoretical areas such as Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, Analytical and Industrial Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry through upper-level course sequences. Further development includes courses like Geochemistry (CHEM-2103), which links chemistry with earth sciences, and Chemical Thermodynamics (CHEM-2201), which focuses on energy changes and physical principles governing chemical systems. Many courses are supported by lab components that enhance practical skills, data analysis, and experimentation.
