COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology program at Cape Breton University offers a structured progression of courses that build knowledge from basic cellular processes to advanced ecological and environmental understanding. At the beginning level, students study Cell and Molecular Biology (BIOL-1101), Organismal and Evolutionary Biology (BIOL-1601), and related introductory courses that focus on cell structure, DNA, evolution, and biodiversity, along with laboratory training. Supporting courses like Human Biology and Edible Plants introduce applied biological concepts. In the second year, students move into more specialized areas such as Cell and Molecular Biology II, Microbiology, Genetics, Human Anatomy, and Physiology, which deepen understanding of genetic mechanisms, human body systems, and microorganisms, all supported by lab-based learning. Upper-level courses explore more complex biological systems, including Plant Diversity, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Biology, and Environmental Issues, emphasizing fieldwork and real-world applications. Additional courses such as Drugs and Behavior and specialized ecology subjects allow students to explore interdisciplinary topics linking biology with health and environmental science. Overall, the curriculum is designed to combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory and field experience, helping students develop strong analytical, research, and scientific skills. This prepares graduates for careers or further studies in healthcare, environmental science, research, biotechnology, and related biological sciences.
