COURSE CURRICULUM

The BACS SPAL program spans four years and includes a mix of core courses, electives, and experiential components. Year one introduces foundational concepts in community studies, sport sociology, and physical activity. Courses include Introduction to Community Studies, Sport in Society, and Anatomy and Physiology. In year two, students delve into leadership theories, coaching principles, and event management, with courses like Leadership in Sport, Coaching Methods, and Sport Marketing. Year three focuses on advanced topics such as sport policy, community development, and research methods, including Sport Policy and Governance, Community Development through Sport, and Research Methods in Sport. The final year emphasizes practical application through a co-op work term, capstone project, and electives in areas like outdoor recreation or adapted physical activity. Students must complete 120 credits, including 42 in SPAL concentration, 24 in community studies core, and general electives. The curriculum integrates Mi'kmaq studies and offers opportunities for certifications in coaching and first aid.
