COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) in Political Science at Cape Breton University is designed to combine the study of political systems with a strong community-focused and applied learning approach. In the first year, students take introductory political science courses along with core community studies and general arts electives, focusing on foundational concepts such as government systems, political theory, and basic analytical and communication skills. In the second year, the curriculum expands into core areas including Canadian politics, comparative politics, international relations, public policy, and public administration, while also connecting these topics to community issues and social contexts. In the third year, students engage in more advanced and applied learning, including courses in Canadian and international law, political philosophy, social justice, research methods, and policy analysis, with opportunities for experiential learning and community engagement. In the fourth year, students complete senior seminars, advanced electives, and a capstone or independent research project that focuses on real-world political and community issues such as governance, inequality, and public decision-making. Across all four years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, research, communication, and problem-solving skills. The BACS structure also allows interdisciplinary electives, preparing graduates for careers in public service, government, policy development, law, international organizations, journalism, and community-based work.
