COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) with Mathematics at Cape Breton University would follow a flexible interdisciplinary structure combining mathematical study with community-focused learning. In the first year, students take introductory mathematics courses such as calculus and algebra along with core community studies and general arts electives, focusing on foundational mathematical reasoning, functions, and problem-solving skills. In the second year, students progress into core areas including multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, discrete mathematics, and introductory statistics, while also studying community-based courses that connect analytical thinking with real-world issues. In the third year, the curriculum advances into real analysis, abstract algebra, probability, numerical methods, and applied mathematics, along with community studies electives and opportunities to explore interdisciplinary applications in science, economics, or social systems. In the fourth year, students complete advanced mathematics courses such as complex analysis, mathematical modeling, and advanced statistics, along with a capstone or independent research project that may integrate mathematical theory with community or applied problems. Across all four years, students develop strong skills in logic, quantitative reasoning, abstraction, and data analysis, while the BACS structure allows electives from sociology, economics, psychology, and other disciplines, preparing graduates for careers in education, data analysis, finance, research, and applied problem-solving fields.
