COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) in French at Cape Breton University is designed to combine community-focused learning with progressive French language development and Francophone cultural studies. In the first year, students complete introductory community studies courses along with beginner-level French language courses, focusing on foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as general arts electives. In the second year, students progress to intermediate French language courses while also studying Francophone culture, communication practices, and community-related subjects, helping them connect language learning with real-world social contexts. In the third year, the program advances to higher-level French study, including advanced language courses, Francophone literature, linguistics, and cultural studies, alongside applied community studies courses such as research methods, social issues, and community engagement. In the fourth year, students focus on advanced integration of both disciplines through senior-level seminars, independent research, and a capstone or directed project within Community Studies, often incorporating French language or Francophone community topics. Across all four years, students develop strong communication, analytical, and intercultural skills. The flexible structure allows electives from multiple disciplines, preparing graduates for careers in public service, translation, education, community development, and other fields requiring French proficiency and community-based knowledge.
