COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) with a focus on English at Cape Breton University combines interdisciplinary community studies with core English language and literature courses. In the first year, students typically complete introductory English courses along with general arts and community studies subjects, building foundational skills in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking.In the second year, the curriculum becomes more focused, with students studying a range of literary genres such as poetry, prose, and drama, while also exploring cultural and social contexts through community studies courses. This stage helps students understand how language and literature connect to society, culture, and community development. In the third year, students engage in more advanced English courses that emphasize literary analysis, interpretation, and theoretical approaches, alongside community-based learning that may include research, social issues, and applied community work. Throughout the program, students develop strong skills in analytical thinking, research, writing, and cultural understanding, while gaining insight into how language shapes communities and human experiences. The curriculum is flexible, allowing students to choose electives from both English and community studies, preparing them for careers in education, writing, social services, media, and community development, or for further academic study in related fields.
