COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) degree at Cape Breton University is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of communities, focusing on social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions. In the first year, students complete introductory courses in community studies along with general arts subjects to build foundational skills in critical thinking, communication, and social analysis. The second year introduces more specialized topics such as community development, social justice, diversity, and cultural studies, helping students understand the challenges and opportunities faced by different communities. In the third year, the program emphasizes applied learning and practical experience, with courses that explore community research methods, leadership, policy, and program development. Students are encouraged to engage with real-world issues and may participate in community-based projects or experiential learning opportunities that connect academic knowledge with practice. Throughout the program, students develop skills in collaboration, problem-solving, research, and effective communication, preparing them to work in diverse community settings.
