COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science at Cape Breton University is designed to provide a progressive understanding of political systems, governance, law, and global issues through theoretical and applied learning. In the first year, students take introductory political science courses along with general arts electives, focusing on foundational concepts such as political theory, government systems, and basic analytical and writing skills. In the second year, the curriculum expands into core areas including Canadian politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, public policy, and public administration, helping students understand how political systems operate at local, national, and global levels. In the third year, students engage in more advanced and specialized study, including courses in Canadian law, international law, social justice, global politics, political philosophy, and research methods, with increased emphasis on critical analysis and academic writing. In the fourth year, students complete senior seminars, advanced electives, and an independent research project or capstone course, allowing them to apply political science theories to real-world issues such as governance, inequality, and international affairs. Across all four years, students develop strong skills in analysis, research, communication, and critical thinking, preparing them for careers in government, law, public policy, international organizations, journalism, and related fields
