COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics at Cape Breton University is designed to develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills through a progressive study of pure and applied mathematics. In the first year, students take introductory courses in calculus, algebra, and general arts electives, building foundational skills in mathematical reasoning, functions, and basic problem-solving techniques. In the second year, students move into core areas such as calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, discrete mathematics, and introductory statistics, gaining a deeper understanding of mathematical structures and methods. In the third year, the curriculum becomes more advanced, including courses in real analysis, abstract algebra, probability, advanced calculus, and numerical methods, while also introducing applications in science, engineering, and computing. In the fourth year, students complete senior-level mathematics courses and electives, often including advanced topics such as complex analysis, advanced statistics, mathematical modeling, and potentially a research project or seminar-based course that emphasizes independent thinking and application of mathematical theory. Across all four years, students strengthen skills in logic, computation, abstraction, and data analysis. The program also allows electives from other disciplines, supporting interdisciplinary learning. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, finance, data analysis, actuarial science, research, and technology, or for further graduate study in mathematics and related fields.
