COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Cape Breton University builds progressively from foundational knowledge to advanced, specialized expertise in communication studies. In the first year, students focus on introductory communication courses alongside general arts subjects, developing essential skills in critical thinking, writing, and analysis. The second year deepens this foundation with courses in interpersonal communication, media studies, and cultural analysis, allowing students to examine how communication functions within social, political, and cultural contexts. In the third year, students engage in more focused and applied learning, exploring topics such as organizational communication, public relations, rhetoric, media theory, and research methods, while strengthening their ability to analyze and present complex ideas. The fourth year emphasizes advanced study and independent work, often including senior-level seminars, research projects, or capstone experiences that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. Throughout the program, students build strong competencies in public speaking, media literacy, teamwork, and professional communication.
