COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) program at Cape Breton University offers a progressive series of community-focused and experiential courses that guide students through increasing levels of research, collaboration, and real-world problem solving. It begins with COMS-1100, a foundational course where students work in small groups to develop key academic and practical skills such as research, writing, problem-solving, and critical analysis. This is followed by COMS-2100, where students engage in applied research, further refining their ability to evaluate and analyze real-world issues through group-based projects. COMS-2101 introduces students to work placements aligned with their career goals, blending academic learning with hands-on professional experience. In the upper years, COMS-3100 centers on a Community Action Project where students investigate local issues and implement meaningful solutions, while COMS-3101 offers a second opportunity for professional work experience. The program culminates with COMS-4100, a senior seminar course where students complete individual, self-directed projects that reflect their learning and contributions to their community. All courses, whether delivered online, in-class, or in community settings, emphasize experiential learning, teamwork, and interdisciplinary approaches. Requisites are structured to ensure students progress through the program with increasing levels of responsibility and independence, and successful course completion often requires participation in both "A" and "B" parts of multi-semester offerings.
