COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MSc) in Physics at Lakehead University is a thesis-based program that offers advanced training and research opportunities in condensed matter physics, materials science, theoretical physics, and biophysics. The program is designed to develop students' research abilities, critical thinking, technical expertise, and scientific communication skills, preparing them for successful careers in industry, academic institutions, and research organizations. A key feature of the program is the emphasis on hands-on experience with advanced equipment and technologies, providing students with practical skills that give them a competitive advantage in the job market. Theoretical physics research includes topics such as superconductivity, topological quantum materials, quantum magnets, general relativity, dynamic systems, and high-performance scientific computing. In experimental condensed matter physics, students may explore optical and Raman spectroscopy, magnetic and transport properties of materials, and the synthesis and characterization of ceramics, single crystals, thin films, and nanostructures. Biophysics research involves nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, studies of membrane dynamics and phase transitions, and scattering techniques like neutron, x-ray, and light scattering to investigate lipid-water systems and protein-membrane interactions. Computational methods are also used in biomolecular simulations. The program is supported by dedicated electronics, glassblowing, and machine shop services, and students have access to extensive computing facilities including UNIX servers and high-performance computing clusters.
