COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Material Physics International Student Program (ISP) at Brock University requires the successful completion of 5.0 or 6.0 credits, depending on whether students choose the course-based or Major Research Project (MRP) option. The program begins with the non-credit PHYS 5N02 Graduate Science Preparation Seminar to support students' transition into graduate studies. Core theoretical training includes PHYS 5P70 Advanced Condensed Matter Physics and PHYS 5P83 Foundations of Materials Physics Characterization. Students must also choose two 0.5-credit theoretical electives from a selection of advanced physics topics such as electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and magnetism. The program emphasizes hands-on laboratory experience through courses like PHYS 5P79 Advanced Experimental Methods in Condensed Matter Physics, PHYS 5P80 Experimental Methods in Materials Physics, PHYS 5P81 Sample Preparation and Characterization Techniques, and PHYS 5P82 Materials Physics Term Project. PHYS 5P10 Introduction to Scientific Computing introduces computational methods used in materials research, while PHYS 5P92 Graduate Seminar in Materials Physics supports research development and communication skills. Students pursuing the MRP option complete PHYS 5P96 and PHYS 5P97, which involve in-depth, supervised research projects. This program equips graduates with theoretical knowledge, experimental skills, and computational expertise required for careers in advanced materials research or further academic study.
