COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Athletic Therapy (MAT) program at Brock University combines lecture and lab-based coursework with extensive experiential learning through clinical practicum placements and a Major Research Project. Over five semesters of clinical placements, students apply their theoretical and practical knowledge in real-world, patient-focused settings under the supervision of certified athletic therapists and other allied health professionals. These placements are designed to develop clinical competence and confidence, culminating in an immersive final placement that supports the transition from student to professional practitioner. In parallel, students complete a Major Research Project focused on clinically relevant topics, which strengthens their ability to integrate research into evidence-based practice. The program’s curriculum is built to foster the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional behaviours expected of entry-level athletic therapists. Aligned with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) Competency Framework, the MAT program equips students to challenge the CATA National Certification Examination—required for designation as a Certified Athletic Therapist in Canada. Through a combination of rigorous academic study, hands-on clinical training, and applied research, students are prepared to provide high-quality, ethical, and inclusive care across diverse athletic therapy environments, including sports teams, rehabilitation clinics, and community health settings.
