COURSE CURRICULUM

The program of study for the MA in Critical Sociology requires students to complete SOCI 5F90 (MA Thesis), SOCI 5P01 (Critical Social Theories), SOCI 5P02 (Critical Social Research Design and Methods), two half-credit electives, and SOCI 5N00 (Graduate Workshop). Electives are typically chosen within the Critical Sociology program but may include approved courses from other Brock graduate programs, other Ontario universities through OVGS, or Directed Studies, subject to the Director’s approval. Scheme C is designed for completion in six terms, emphasizing in-depth, specialized research. To fulfill the thesis requirement (SOCI 5F90), students must produce and publicly defend a thesis demonstrating independent research and original thought, with the topic selected in consultation with the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee and approved via a formal proposal. Full-time students typically complete the core courses SOCI 5P01, SOCI 5P02, and the Graduate Workshop SOCI 5N00 (which spans two terms), alongside two electives during their first fall and winter terms. Part-time students generally complete SOCI 5P01, SOCI 5P02, and the two-term workshop in their first year, followed by at least one half-credit course annually. This structure supports rigorous, focused study and equips students with the theoretical and methodological skills necessary for advanced sociological research.
