COURSE CURRICULUM

In the thesis option of the MA in Game Studies at Brock University, students engage in an intensive academic research experience that combines foundational coursework with the development of a substantial original thesis. Students are required to complete five half-credit courses, including two core courses (GAME 5P01 and GAME 5P02) that establish the theoretical and methodological foundations of game studies, along with three elective courses that allow for specialization in areas of interest. With the approval of their supervisor and the graduate program director, students may choose one elective from another graduate program to support their research focus. The central component of the thesis option is the completion of GAME 5F90, a major independent research project culminating in an 80-100 page thesis, which must be defended publicly in an oral examination. This pathway is ideal for students who are interested in academic research or who are considering future doctoral studies. Full-time students typically complete the program over six terms (two years), while part-time students usually finish within twelve terms (four years). The thesis option equips students with advanced analytical, research, and writing skills applicable to academic, creative, and industry-based careers within and beyond the field of game studies.
