COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in English at Brock University requires all students to complete two core courses: ENGL 5P00 and ENGL 5F01. Students pursuing the Major Research Paper (MRP) option must also take four additional English courses selected from a range of variable topics, while Thesis students are required to take three such additional courses. With approval from the Graduate Program Director, students may replace one of these courses with either a course from another MA program at the university or a directed reading course (ENGL 5P02). MRP students, under the guidance of the Graduate Program Director, will arrange for a supervisor and second reader, selecting a topic in consultation with both and completing a substantial research paper based on independent study. Thesis students, likewise under the guidance of the Graduate Program Director, will arrange for a thesis supervisor and work with a supervisory committee to develop and complete an in-depth thesis on a chosen research topic. The program emphasizes critical thinking, literary analysis, and scholarly research, preparing students for doctoral studies or professional careers that value strong analytical, writing, and communication skills. Both streams offer flexibility for students to shape their academic experience based on their research interests.
